Does Sutton Council Do Pest Control? Your Options
Sutton Council’s pest control provision for residents has narrowed considerably over the years, in line with most of London. For many household pest problems across the borough, a private contractor is now the realistic route.
Before you assume that, check it. Council provision changes, and it is worth five minutes on the council’s own site before you pay anyone.
Confirm the current position. Look at the pest control pages on sutton.gov.uk before booking anything. Do not take a price from a pest control company’s website as the council’s current charge — including from this page.
Why councils stopped doing this
It is not specific to Sutton. British Pest Control Association research published in October 2026 found 46% of UK local authorities now provide no pest control service to residents whatsoever. Pest control has never been a statutory duty for a council in the way refuse collection is, so when budgets tightened it was among the first services to go or move onto full cost recovery.
A separate BPCA report found that around half of local authorities no longer offer a direct service or have significantly reduced it, leaving residents to pay privately or attempt treatment themselves. The same report noted that residents in lower-income areas face both the highest pest risk and the least access to council provision.
Council or private: how to decide
- How many visits are included. A single-visit price is not cheaper than a three-visit programme if the job needs three visits.
- How long the wait is. If it is rats in a kitchen or a business that cannot trade, speed beats price.
- Whether you need paperwork. Landlords, agents and businesses need a written record of what was found and done.
- Whether the entry point gets fixed. Treatment deals with what is inside. Proofing is what stops it happening again.
Sutton, Cheam, Carshalton and Wallington: what we get called to
The borough splits fairly neatly. The suburban semis and bungalows around Cheam, Belmont and parts of Carshalton bring mostly rodent and wasp work, with lofts and soffits the usual way in. Sutton town centre is a different job: a dense run of restaurants, takeaways and retail units where cockroaches and rodents move between premises through shared service areas and bin stores.
There is also a substantial rented and converted stock across the borough, which is where most bed bug and flea work comes from, and where a written report for the landlord or agent matters as much as the treatment.
If you run a business in Sutton
Council residential services do not help you. Under the Food Safety Act 1990 and the retained food hygiene regulations, food businesses must keep premises pest-proofed and have adequate documented procedures as part of their food safety management. No law requires a pest control contract, but without one it is difficult to demonstrate adequate procedures to an Environmental Health Officer, and evidence of pest activity at an inspection will reduce your Food Hygiene Rating.
